Jack
Johnson is My New Boyfriend
Okay, my obsession started with "Flake." Any time I catch
that song on the radio, I can't help but start dancing behind the
wheel. So if you see me in the Lude, don't laugh. Never mind, you're
totally gonna laugh. Because it's not just Jack Johnson that makes
me act like a fool in my car. There's a littany of stupid pop songs,
sappy love songs, and heavy alternative/rock songs that inspire
me to perform on the highway.
But
Jack. Oh Jack. Like I said, it started with "Flake."
Then I heard a couple of his others, which inspired me to purchase
the CD. I put it in the CD player expecting the typical Three
Song Wonder. You know, there are a few you can listen to, but
you'll never just listen the whole way through without hitting
the skip button. Oh no. Oh wow. I'm freaking out. I'm driving.
I'm listening. I'm loving the lyrics. I'm loving his silly "La
da da da da da da." ("Bubbletoes.") I have a thing
for songs with the silly repeated phrase.
Examples:
Pearl Jam, "Jeremy"
The Police, "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic"
U2, "Elevation"
Beatles, "Hey Jude"
Listen
to the above and you'll know what I'm talking about. Not only
is the repeated phrase a real beaut
but Jack's songs have
the ability to put you in whatever mood you choose. You feel like
being happy? Grab a piece of "Middle Man" and just try
and keep up with those lyrics. You feel a bit mellow? Get yourself
track twelve: "Losing Hope." You want something fun
and upbeat? Awww yeah, you know I'm talking about "Bubbletoes."
Then
I saw a picture of Jack, and my love deepened in a way I never
thought it could. I heard he's the new heartthrob of Generation
Y. Sigh. That sounds like a lot of competition.
Can
I have numerous boyfriends from different musical genres? Because
I don't want to give up Eddie Vedder. It would be a betrayal to
my musical roots. I mean, Eddie is and always will be my number
oneand his music, and his lyrics, well, no one can beat him.
He's the king of alternative. I think Jack is in the pop genre.
Eww. I hate to admit it, but it's true. I love this man. I love
this CD. And Eddie, I promise I have not forgotten about you.
(Riot Act rules. Unfortunately, I can't listen to it anymore since
someone stole it out of my car. But
when I get a replacement, you will get a review as well.)
